The Best Summer House Plans

best summer house plansSummer house plans abound on the internet and you can take your pick of what you think matches how you really want your summer house to look like once finished. Some sites even offer ‘free’ summer house plans.  However many of these building plans do not include a complete list of materials and instructions, and the basic drawings provided lack some of the key information needed to complete construction.

I find this quite surprising but, I suppose, if it’s free you can hardly complain!

Look really hard and you will certainly find sites that provide information on how you can make summer houses from scratch. Just check that the data provided include all the essentials for summerhouse construction – summerhouse plans, of course, with preferably a wide range of designs to choose from; detailed lists of materials needed and inexpensive sources for those materials; and clear assembly instructions.

Some of the best summer house plans we have discovered online have been produced by the master joiner John Metz. I can strongly recommend these, and suggest you take a good look at them yourself.

Even with all this, to assemble one of these beautiful garden buildings you need to be a capable woodworker with some DIY experience.  This can be quite a worry.

So what’s the best way to build the summer house?

Local Building Regulations

Before finalizing any summer house design you should contact your local building authority to check if your plan conforms to any limitations set by your neighborhood association and to any other laws that apply where you are located.  Never start construction of summerhouses without doing this first.

Although a summer house can be considered an extension of your main home, some villages and neighborhoods may have set up guidelines and restrictions on style and how to make a summer house. Be sure to get a list of the allowed types of materials to be included in any plans for summer houses or gazebos, because sometimes these can be quite restrictive.

Take a look at any summerhouses that any of your neighbors might have, to get an idea of what’s allowed and what’s not.

Your Own Summer House Design

Now you should be ready to start! Being able to come up with your own summer house design can really be a very rewarding experience. One of the most satisfying moments in my life is seeing my designs come to fruition. The sense of achievement that makes your spine tingle is really quite hard to match.

However, if you are in a hurry and want to enjoy the amenities that a summer house could bring sooner rather than later, you can go online and secure some remarkable summer house designs for a very small fee – less than $50 will get you not only a huge range of summer house plans but also plans for virtually any woodworking project you might want to undertake in the future.   Garden sheds, garden offices, log cabins, tables, chairs, dog houses, chicken coops – they are all included!

These summerhouse plans enable you to make major alterations based on your own specifications, using the downloaded designs as adjustable working drawings. Do-it-yourself summer house plans are much cheaper than buying flat pack kits, and building your own summer house based on basic but good designs can really be a rewarding experience both during and after assembly. Just check out the costs and limited ranges of ready-made summer houses for sale online or down at the local hardware store.

Build Like An Expert

Knowing how to make a summer house that looks good rather than a bit amateurish does require expert knowledge.  Building a summer house also needs some woodworking capability, as we have already said. If you lack confidence in your woodworking skills you really need some expert help.

Luckily there are some really helpful online guides and plans available.  I have recommended one that has a ton of step-by-step assembly instructions and detailed drawings to explain how to make a summer house from scratch. It also has videos to show how to do all the things necessary to make a really good building from the base up, including a lot of carpentry guidance.

Here’s a sample from one of the many plans for summer houses (this one being a small hexagonal gazebo), so that you can appreciate the level of detail provided:

Taking things slowly and carefully, with professional help if needed, will ensure that you do not make costly mistakes.  Using good plans will mean having accurate dimensions to cut. Timber is expensive these days, so in itself avoiding wastage will easily pay for the cost of online plans.

I have provided an independent review of one plans set that would provide all that you require for building a summer house from scratch, and I suggest that you check it out here – I think you will find it useful.

Choose The Best Summer House Plans

I hope that I have been able to show you how to choose your summer house plans wisely and to look for those with detailed and clear-cut instructions on how to complete each segment of the assembly. Get the right ones and you will have no need to worry about doing the job properly.

One other word of advice.  You will probably need some capable helpers during parts of the construction.  Make sure that they know what you want them to do and what your instructions mean – ‘Hold it!’ can mean different things to different people, for example!

Now, go and have fun building a summer house from scratch!
