So, what does building a gazebo involve?

Assuming that your chosen gazebo design is the octagonal wood gazebo, start by laying eight concrete footings at each corner position and one at dead center.  Fit adjustable anchor bolts to each corner footing and mount the vertical posts on these once the concrete has set.  Fit a nailing pad to the center footing.

The framework for the deck boards is then attached to these vertical posts, making sure that everything is aligned properly.  Then fit the deck boards, making sure that all cut lines are straight and radiating from the center point properly.  This is one of the areas where building a gazebo requires precision – any uneven cut lines will be very obvious and unsightly once the work is finished.

Make and fit the frieze panels between the upper parts of the vertical posts, and then mount the rafters at the precise angle from the post tops to the center kingpost.  Refer to the gazebo plan before cutting any of these angles and rebates.

Finally make and fit the railings and balustrades which, with the frieze panels, will give the outdoor gazebo its own unique character.

This is easy to write but perhaps difficult to understand without having clear diagrams and assembly instructions to hand.  Almost every part needs to be accurately fashioned before building can start, and it is so easy to get details such as cut angles the wrong way round.
