Woodworking – How To Get Great Results

Woodworking – how to get great results first time, every time? If you are new to woodworking, or would like some help with your techniques or to learn some new skills, please read on.

Working with wood can be fun, but it can be a dangerous experience if not performed properly.  Also, it might not work out exactly as planned, particularly if you are not very good at measuring up before you start to cut!

Wood is easy to work with, but you need to acquire a basic knowledge of woodworking techniques if you are to get the best out of your wood working project and keep safe at the same time.

It is difficult to find good courses in beginner woodworking  but we do have one which we strongly recommend. It is part of the MyShedPlans package which we have reviewed favorably elsewhere.

In this course you’ll be able to learn all the basics of woodworking for beginners, including:

  • setting up your workplace
  • wood selection
  • woodworking tools and their care
  • woodworking materials and selection
  • hardware (nails, fasteners, hinges, brackets. etc)
  • joinery
  • finishing
  • safety and good practice

Within each of these main woodworking techniques there are various topics.  For instance, wood finishing includes how to prepare the wood first (sanding, planing, use of files), then how to give it the required final finish (waxing, staining, polishing).  Common tools and their use are also covered, such as the various types of saw, how to use them, sharpening and so on.  You will get a list of all the basic tools needed to carry out a typical woodwork project.

You will be shown how to set up the wood to be worked, using a workbench, clamps, vices, saw bench and other simple woodworking techniques.  Measurements and how to do them properly are covered in some detail, including the selection of the correct carpenters’ pencils, squares, scribes, rules and tapes.

Commonly-used hardware is described, with clear instructions about the correct use of each type and how to prepare the wood for it. You will learn about making holes properly and how to choose the right size and sort of drill bit.  What you use to join different sorts of wood structure, and why.  You will never use the wrong screw again!

One of the most fun things associated with woodworking is the design and construction of a good workbench or work station.  How you do this will be up to you, but you will get great satisfaction out of designing and building a practical working environment just for you, with all the right tools to hand.  Beginner woodworking does not necessarily depend on using a good workbench, but having one will make the job much easier, much safer and much more enjoyable.  The finished product will be considerably better too. It might not look quite like this one, though!

If you want to progress to joinery, which is really the application of woodworking techniques to make finely and accurately finished wood products, such as furniture, then you have the basic groundwork provided in this course.  Expertise, naturally, will only come with practice but the end result will be immensely satisfying and could also be a source of income, if that is your goal.

Most importantly, you will be given much sensible advice and guidance about safe working practices.  Woodworking “how to” tips include use of goggles and gloves, safety guards, storage of tools, fire precautions and many other aspects of a professional woodworking environment.

This is an informative and comprehensive course that we thoroughly recommend for learning beginner techniques.
